Scholarship to study in Brunei

Jungles of Borneo: Tiny Brunei is Big on Personality

What Brunei lacks in size and girth, it makes up for in personality. The diminutive country of Brunei takes up just one tiny piece of the island of Borneo. The remainder of this tropical island belongs to Malaysia. Popular study programs in Brunei are concentrated on the flora, fauna and indigenous peoples of the epic rainforests of Borneo.

Government Scholarships

It’s fairly certain that not many students are trekking off to nether Borneo, the larger island on which tiny Brunei sits. Nevertheless don’t let that stop you from applying for one of the federally funded scholarships for international study programs:
  • The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships program assist over 700 undergraduates with study abroad programs, annually. The program is reserved for underprivileged students who are Pell Grant recipients. Applicants must of course have above average academic records and the more innovative their proposed course of study, the better. Gilman Scholars may earn up to $5,000 for a year in Brunei. The next generation of American leaders just got a lot more diverse.
  • The David L. Boren Scholarships go to students pursuing studies in non-traditional countries, which would include Brunei. Since much of Asia remains high on the national security radar applicants may be well considered. Candidates must be willing to learn the Malay language and immerse themselves in Brunei culture. Boren Scholars must work for a length of time in the federal government in return for these very generous scholarships. Graduate students may earn up to $26,000.

Private funds

The Henry Luce Foundation funds dozens of philanthropic educational programs designed to offer top scholars once-in-a-lifetime access to an Asian culture, such as that of Brunei. The unique requirement of the Luce Scholars Program is the fact that the fellowships are reserved for those with little to no experience of an Asian country or language. Eligible students must be able to prove that their education or future career requires knowledge of the Malay language and a time of study in Brunei. Candidates may hail from a range of academic disciplines. Another hitch is that Luce Scholars be recommended for the awards by faculty at their college.
The Blakemore Freeman Fellowships for Advanced Asian Language Study provide competitive funding for graduate students and professionals who require a stint in an Asian country learning an advanced level of language as a requirement for their educations or careers. Applicants who need to go to Brunei and study Malay, the native language, will come up against stiff competition. Fellowships fund a yearlong program and cover the cost of travel, living, tuition and a monthly stipend.
The Council of American Overseas Research Centers offers Multi Country Fellowships to researchers who must work in more than one country. To be eligible, only one country of the student’s choice is required to have an overseas research institute. Brunei does not, but other Asian locations do, such as Sri Lanka and Cambodia. If applicants fit the bill for funding the CAORC kicks in $9,000 for the trip. Students must be either working on their doctorate or already have a Ph.D. to receive funding.
The Kuala Belalong Field Studies Center is part of the University of Brunei. The center is a focal point for international study and research in the Borneo rainforests of lore. According to the U.S. Forest Service, the Kuala Belalong invites graduate and post-graduate students to apply for fellowships at the center. Applicants of course must have an interest in tropical botany or rainforest conservation to be considered.
The Garden Club of America funds the GCA Awards in Tropical Botany. The scholarship program, administered by the World Wildlife Fund, invites doctoral students to apply for funding allowing them to pursue a course of research in an area like Brunei. This valuable award makes it possible for recipient scholars to rub elbows with like-minded international researchers in the field of tropical ecology and biodiversity. GCA hands out multiple awards of over $5,000 each.
